An Italian Christmas

Italian Christmas

The essence of Christmas in Italy is based on family, love and food: la famiglia, l’amore e il cibo. Nothing is more magical than gathering around a beautifully decorated table to eat, drink and be merry. Here at Malfy, we’d love to share some of our favourite hints and tips to celebrate in true Italian style and ensure that your festive time is fantastico!

You can’t have Christmas without a deliciously refreshing cocktail. Whether it’s an Amalfi Settantacinque or a simple Gin & Tonic, be inspired by our Malfy cocktails.  We also love making our cocktails extra special with garnish ice cubes, adding sliced citrus fruits and fresh herbs into a star-shaped ice cube tray before adding water and freezing. Bellissimo!

Nibbles are an essential part of the festive season. We love arranging fresh rosemary into the shape of a wreath and tumbling over juicy sun blushed tomatoes, olives and miniature mozzarella balls. Nothing is more luxurious than a prosciutto wrapped fig drizzled in truffle honey. Why not check out more recipes in our Relaxed Aperitivo and Super-fast nibbles for friends sections.

Lunch, il pranzo, on Christmas Day is the most important of all the festive feasts and is a lengthy affair. For the main course, why not try our recipe for Stuffed Porchetta? A crunchy crisp crackling pork belly with a very special herby, fruity stuffing that is sure to please all the family!

Italian christmas food

When it comes to something sweet, no one does indulgent desserts quite like the Italians. Whether it is a fruity Panettone – the quintessential Italian Christmas cake – or the chewy nutty flavour of chocolate dipped nougat, we’re in heaven. Here at Malfy we love cloud-like piles of giant white meringues, topped with vanilla cream and lashings of pomegranate syrup. Finish off dessert with a glittering dusting of icing sugar.

Italian celebrations often extend into 26th December with the national holiday of Santo Stefano. Families get together and eat leftover Christmas dishes and sweets. Sounds good to us!

Italian Christmas Dessert

Table decorations sprinkle a little magic on the occasion. We love tying the two ends of rosemary sprigs together to make little Italian inspired napkin rings. As well as lots and lots of candles, we like to add tumblings of fresh clementine and Sorrento lemons – still with their leaves on – or ruby red pomegranates to our table, all nestled amongst fragrant foliage. Eucalyptus, pine and bay leaves are our favourites this time of year. Be playful with jewel-coloured glassware and golden cutlery, adding extra joy to your festive tablescape. If you want to upcycle empty Malfy bottles, why not fill with micro-LED fairy lights to brighten up your party!

However, you choose to celebrate, we wish you a very Merry Christmas…or should we say ‘Buon Natale’!
